Ms. Swaminathan, who earned the title of the father of the India’s green revolution has once again advocated the need for the second green revolution to take care of increasing number of mouths in the country. This highly acclaimed, octogenarian botanist conveniently forgets or prefers to forget the enormous cost of the green revolution. It has led to considerable decline in the water table in India, in particular the northern states on account of excessive use of underground water resources. At the same time increasing dependence on chemicals – pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers for increasing productivity now leads to the significant decline of production over the years. The elite class, who can afford to pay, clamour for the organic food and vegetables though it cost quite higher compared to the food, produced with the help of chemicals. The need of the hour is holistic approach to the problems, being faced by the country. The only positive indicator has come in the form of preliminary census report that for the first time after independence of the country, six decades ago, the country’s population rate is not increasing at the rate as it used to be in the past.

Agreed.. but who is there to take care of Indian farming sector and to draft policies to start the second green revolution? Our agriculture minister has other different and 'important' assignments to complete, He has no time to think about agriculture, how can he preside any meeting to discuss the need of second green revolution.
